Let me start of by professing my love for the Kindle. E-readers are definitely the future, and it looks like the future is finally about to descend upon our public school systems. McGraw-Hill just launched it's first digital only textbook.
There are numerous advantages of the digital only format. When publishers need to make minor updates, they won't have to print thousands of these heavy text books to schools around the country. It saves paper, saves gas, and most importantly, saves money. Each paper book costs roughly $50-80 dollars to our school systems (Let's not talk about the budget shortfalls that most public entities are facing). Now they can send a quick update so that students will have instant access to the right information.
With the price of e-readers dropping quickly, our kids might be able to get their hands on one sooner than later. Worst case, parents should buy their kids an e-reader instead of a phone or video game system.
I love my Kindle!
A while back (December to be exact), all I wanted was a few good books. Lucky me, I ended up getting all three! After a very busy Sping and Summer, I finally finished reading Style Statement by Carrie McCarthy and Danielle LaPorte, and I'm really glad I did. I may not be someone who is totally oblivious to style, but it wouldn't be a stretch to say my style needed some fine tuning. Sometimes all of the passing trends and influence from others can muddy the waters of your true self. This book aims to pull the real you out of everything else with a lot of questions and guidance. Of course, everyone's Style Statement will be different, and should be different, but here is what I came up with:
First of all, a Style Statement is encompassed in two little words, the first of which describes 80% of you, the second, 20% of you. My Style Statement is... drumroll, if you please... Cherished Inspiration. Since I'm better with pictures than with words, I'll explain it just that way.

My Cherished side, which makes up the largest part of my personality, is all about family and home. It makes sense, considering the fact that my husband and I are just starting our family (anytime now!) and live close to our families. Naturally, my home and the way it looks is important to me. I spend a lot of my free time there! My dream home? A Parisian apartment- located in Houston. (Photo via Elle Decor.)
Light and airy is what I love. Light colors and lots of white are relaxing and clean. Heavy, dark decor makes me feel weighted down. It would seem I need to make a lot of changes to my current furniture! (Unfortunately, the vanity above has been sold, but isn't it great? By deerdane via Etsy.)
My Cherished wardrobe: Tailored jeans and simple tees a la J. Crew with just a little bit of sparkle (like the gorgeous dangly earrings below!) My Inspired wardrobe: A healthy dose of sparkle courtesy of Rodarte (file that one under I Wish...)
For everyday, I like my sparkle in small doses. A pair of earrings (Indian Stone Earrings in Fuschia by Chameleon Jewelry from Charm and Chain, $48) or a necklace is all I need.
My Cherished side always needs a project and loves to take care of people. Baking delicious french macarons will kill two birds with one stone! (Macarons from Sparkles Kitchen via Etsy- yum!)
If you're a sucker for style, I'd highly recommend reading Style Statement. It was a lot of fun to complete all of the questions, and it has helped me develop a style all my own. Nothing better!

My Big Finale!
11:24 AM
Well, this is it. My final farewell. Today is my last day at High Fashion Home. I'm leaving to pursue a career as a stay-at-home mom. See?
Yep, I'm ready to pop! All our bags are packed, we're ready to go. Except we'll be leaving in a Prius, not a jetplane, and we'll be back home from the hospital in a couple of days.

My pretty new Vera Bradley diaper bag, all packed and ready!
Welcome to Baby James' little nursery!
Here's hoping he's a good sleeper! I made all of the bedding with fabrics I got from High Fashion Home and High Fashion Fabrics. It was a lot of work, but I'm happy with the result! We got the crib (probably the simplest one we could find without being ultra-modern) at Babies R Us.
I surprised my husband with an LSU mobile... Geaux Tigers!
A little corner in which to rock the little guy to sleep. We ordered the rocking chair from Pottery Barn Kids.
I also made these book slings with a fabric I got at High Fashion Fabrics. They're filled with the classics- Goodnight Moon, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, and so on... I found the tutorial to make them here!
A yellow vintage buffet became our changing table. We filled the inside with baskets to hold all of his stuff! He has a lot and he hasn't even been born yet!
I fell in love with a book of Eric Carle's famous pictures. I framed a few of my favorites to add some (more) color to the room.
My friend Cynthia painted this for Baby James! Isn't it perfect? Baby's first piece of art!
I think our dog, Kola, is practicing being a guard dog. Or maybe she thinks the nursery is her room. Whatever floats her boat!
It's been a lot of fun blogging for High Fashion over the past few years! Maybe I'll make an appearance from time to time, but for now it's going to be all about preparing for, and taking care of, our new baby!

Apt. Therapy + A Big Book = Small, Cool Places
3:23 AM
Okay!!....I have to admit it, I have not been to Apartment Therapy's blog lately and I know you guys want to hurt me bad! (GASP!!) While I was over at one of my new favorite blogs, Cool Hunting, I stumbled onto something that I should have known about ages ago!!
Apartment Therapy has just released a book, named Apartment Therapy's Big Book of Small, Cool Places, by Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, founder of blog. I checked out the preview on their blog and I'm so excited that I'm going to check to see if we can receive in the store, so keep your fingers crossed.

Moleskine has a very cool new product out for those of you with passion. They are (appropriately) called Moleskine Passions- journals to record the things you love.
My dad would probably be into the Book Journal, where he can make lists of books he'd like to read, make notes about books he's currently perusing, and jot down good quotes.
My in-laws would like the Wine Journal where they can write down their favorite wines and vineyards, learn new wine lingo, and keep a list of what they currently have in their wine refrigerators. Yes, plural refrigerators.
I would love the the Recipe Journal since I'm always looking for new recipes and getting opinions from the husband on what he likes, what I could change, what could go with that chicken we had last night, and so on and so forth.
They also have music, film, and wellness journals for those who love music, film, and themselves. Their words, not mine!

I Love Macarons by Hisako Ogita at Amazon
Chestnut Macarons with Pink Champagne from Mowielicious via Tastespotting.
P.S. Did you notice the Daily Drop Cap I used by Jessica Hische? Quite useful, eh?
Give me books, books, and more books. If I had a drug of choice, it would be books. What a clean, legal addiction to have. Three are topping my list currently...
I've been into Tord Boontje's whimsical designs for a while. It would be nice to have all wrapped up neatly in a book where I could look at them any time I need inspiration. Tord Boontje by Martina Margetts, $47.25 @ Amazon.
Every since I read an interview with Carrie McCarthy on Coco + Kelley, I've been obsessed with getting my hands on her book! What is my style statement and how can I put it to work in my life? Style Statement: Live By Your Own Design by Carrie McCarthy & Danielle LaPorte, $7.80 @ Amazon.
Macarons are a rather recent obsession. I didn't taste one until this past summer. I can't believe what I was missing! They're delicious! I want to make a trip to Paris just to savor some, but until then, I can look at pictures of them and drool. I Love Macarons by Hisako Ogita, $10.17 @ Amazon.
