Approximately 4 million trees were lost in the destructive Texas wildfire in 2011. A massive collaborative effort is being undertaken by the Arbor Day Foundation, Texas A&M Forest Service, and Texas Parks & Wildlife. They launched the Texas Lost Pines Forest Recovery Campaign to restore and plant trees in Central Texas over the next 5 years.

Since 2008,  High Fashion Home and Arbor Day Foundation have made a commitment to plant one tree for every piece of furniture purchased at High Fashion Home. Thanks to all of our wonderful customers, over 44,000 trees have been planted towards the Lost Pines Forest Recovery Campaign. High Fashion Home might be just one store. But when working together with great people and incredible organizations, we can start making a difference.

As of March 31, 2014, High Fashion Home and the Arbor Day Foundation have committed to planting 70,031 trees around the world.

The Stoney Cross House has been very thoughtfully planned. PAD Studio is behind this simple and eco-friendly beauty set within The New Forest National Park in the UK. Rainwater harvesting, grey water recycling, a natural swimming pond and the use of sustainable materials helped this home fit in easily with its earthy surroundings.

A house made with hemp you ask? Yes! Tony Budden and Duncan Parker worked with Michael Orchard of New Earth Architecture and Wolf & Wolf Architecture to create this South African home where they used lots of the underrated hemp. Hemp insulation, hempcrete used to make the external walls and 85% of the furniture and cabinetry is made from hempboard. The Hemp House also boasts numerous other eco-friendly design innovations. A beautiful home that is earth friendly with forward thinking design. Well done.

In honor of Earth Day, which is this Sunday, April 22nd, I thought we should have a post dedicated to Earth friendly items and ways to lessen our carbon footprint. Whether it's re-doing a piece of furniture rather than buying a new one or using natural, non-toxic household cleaners, every little bit helps and each of us can make a difference. HAPPY EARLY EARTH DAY!!

A little while after Christmas I bought some deeply discounted organic sheets from Anthropologie (so love Anthro). I love my sheets so much. They have a fun green print all over and I love that they are made with organic cotton. The growing of organic cotton is much more eco-friendly than non-organic cotton and I wholly support that! Anyhoo, loving these sheets got me to lookin' for other organic cotton bedding options so here's what I found.

I just love reading about people thinking outside the box. Simon Laws of Anthill Constructions went way outside the box when he collaborated on the design of this fantastic, eco-friendly home near the Great Barrier Reef in Australia!! The Drew House (owner is Australian artist, Marian Drew) was created to be a homey, camp site like structure for the Drew family. The house is mostly prefabricated and has rainwater tanks, solar hot water and electrical panels AND a community water recycling system! So cool!
